Every effort by the President to blame AKEL for distorting his statements is an insult to himself and the institution he serves

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7th February 2020, Nicosia

The President of the Republic in January 2018 stated word for word the following:

“If they choose to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriots in a separate, independent entity, then they must restrict themselves to what is inside the exclusive economic zone of that illegal entity. Consequently, they have no reason to dispute the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.”

We call on the President and his associates to tell us exactly the point AKEL distorted.

Every effort by Mr. Anastasiades to blame AKEL for distorting his statements is an insult to himself and the institution he serves.

With regards the whole of the President’s lengthy statement, we will just confine ourselves to the fact that the results of his actions fell far short of the long-term objectives the Greek Cypriot side had set.

We will repeat for the umpteenth time. If only Mr. Anastasiades would handle the next steps on the Cyprus problem by sticking to the agreed framework and with consistency and by taking initiatives and he shouldn’t have any doubt whatsoever that AKEL with responsibility and patriotism will back the procedure.
