AKEL C.C. Press Office, 12th May 2017, Nicosia
The Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL convened today on Friday, 12th May 2017. The agenda of the discussion included the issue of the upcoming Presidential Election, the Cyprus problem, issues concerning pending bills in the House of Representatives, as well as other organizational matters.
As regards the Presidential Elections, a review was made of the course of the implementation of the political plan of action and application of the timeframes, as decided at a previous session of the body. The Political Bureau of the C.C. considers that the implementation of the plan of action is progressing based on the plan that has been prepared and according to the timetable that has been decided.
Furthermore, the discussion on the political profile of the candidate began in today’s session of the Political Bureau, a discussion that will continue at a subsequent session.
It is the conviction of the Political Bureau that through the consultations and soundings being conducted by the party leadership the possibilities exist for AKEL to have a candidate that meets all the prerequisites to win the Presidential Elections and pave the way so that through this victory we can turn a new promising page for Cyprus and our people; to continue the efforts to achieve a solution of the Cyprus problem that will liberate and reunify our country and people on the basis of a Bi-communal, Bi-zonal Federation; to end the neoliberal policies of austerity; to achieve sustainable development, support and enhance the welfare state and to stamp out intertwining interests and corruption.
As regards the negotiations on the Cyprus problem, the Political Bureau reiterated AKEL’s position that regardless of the difficulties that exist at the negotiating table and irrespective of Turkey’s provocative actions, the prospects for a solution of the Cyprus problem have not faded. Provided, of course, that for all the concerned parties remain consistent to the agreed framework of the solution and that what has been achieved at the negotiations is safeguarded.
