Economic policies have led to dramatically widening socio-economic inequalities

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th February 2016, Nicosia

InequalityIn an economy where an economic “success story” is in progress people do not run the risk of mass imprisonment because they can’t fulfill their financial obligations. In an economy that generates new incomes citizens can handle unexpected expenses.

In 2015 in the Cyprus of the Memorandum, 15,000 arrest warrants for financial debts have been suspended. In the Cyprus of ongoing austerity policies more than half of the people cannot cope financially with a sudden expense.

These figures and statistics add to the given situation reflecting the harsh reality experienced by the overwhelming majority of our fellow citizens, which the government deliberately chooses to ignore. The government and ruling forces are still talking about the dawning of a new day (“Spring”) when their economic policies have led to a never-ending heavy winter, dramatically widening social and economic inequalities in our country.

Instead of the Government celebrating about its supposed “economic miracle” it would be better if it were to focus on addressing the real problems of society and citizens.
