DISY-DIKO-EDEK rejected AKEL’s proposal to protect believers from the financial exploitation of their faith

14 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The DISY, DIKO and EDEK parties today rejected for debate the inclusion of the issue requested by AKEL on the economic exploitation of religious faith in the Parliamentary Internal Affairs Committee.

At a time when Cypriot society is shocked by the revelations in the Abbey of Avvakum case, certain forces are refusing to discuss these immoral and illegal practices. They deny that the State has a responsibility to prevent those who traffic in human suffering and to dismantle the charlatanism rings that exploit religious faith to make money.

Those who truly respect the religious feelings of the people must be the first to oppose the practices of economic exploitation of those feelings.
