DISY-Anastasiades government imposes demands of big enterprises with regards shop opening hours

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th May 2015, Nicosia

Tecon working hourshe DISY-Anastasiades government without any dialogue with the interested parties and political forces, for two years now with an unprecedented authoritarianism, both abusively and illegally, has imposed the maximalist demands of a handful of big enterprises in the retail trade sector with regards shop opening hours.

The government’s dogmatic fixation to serve big capital this time appears to have gone beyond every limit due to the seemingly agreed decision of the Ministerial Council with regards the violation of the legislation approved recently by the overwhelming majority of the House of Representatives and which specifically and unequivocally provides for the abolition of the validity of any decrees and their replacement by regulations.

If the government’s intentions are confirmed, then this will not only represent a deliberate policy choice of the government’s total rupture with the House of Representatives, the working people and the thousands of small-middle sized enterprises; it would also constitute an anti-democratic action deliberately undermining institutions and legality, with all that this entails.

We urge President Anastasiades, even at this late stage, to realize where political life and institutions are being led if he insists on this policy guideline. We express the wish and hope that second and wiser thoughts will prevail and that eventually he himself and his government will follow the path of prudence, consensus and honorable compromise.
