DIKO criticizes the Government but is supporting one of its main figures

AKEL MP A.Damianou criticizes DIKO:

The government is building the economy’s robustness on people’s backs

3 October 2022, ‘Astra’ radio

The government should not boast that some macroeconomic indicators will improve as the cost of achieving these partially improved figures must be measured, AKEL MP Aristos Damianou pointed out speaking to ‘Astra’ radio.

We can, he said, contrast these numbers with others that are not so good and do not suit the government, figures that are not so good for the economy and are certainly not good at all for households and small and medium-sized enterprises.

The AKEL MP added that anyone who knows some fundamental things about economics knows that after a prolonged crisis and a recession, recovery begins and at some point positive signs are recorded in the economy.

There are data released by the Statistical Office and confirmed by Eurostat itself, A.Damianou stressed that reveal that one in five Cypriots are driven into poverty. It is a fact that price increases are increasing as well as inflationary trends. Furthermore, that housing is an elusive dream, that rents have reached a unprecedented levels and it is obvious that immediate solutions and planning are needed.

We don’t expect, the AKEL MP stressed, neither lessons to be delivered, nor any policy change on the part of the government 4.5 months before the end of its term. People willing, we will send them home for a progressive government to come in and promote solutions to the burning problems of society and the economy.

Regarding the criticism of the Anastasiades government made by DIKO, AKEL MP Aristos Damianou suggested that the Democratic Party must de facto give an answer as to how it is possible for DIKO to support one of the DISY government’s key figures [in the presidential elections] and one of the main protagonists for 9 years of the Anastasiades government.

AKEL MP Aristos Damianou went on to add that DIKO criticizing the economic policies of an administration but at the same time supporting the key figure of the Presidency and Nicos Anastasiades who together with DISY President Averof Neophytou shaped the decisions of the government is a very big political paradox.
