Defending International law is not an ideological obsession – it is in Cyprus’s best interests

11 September 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Once again, DISY – which in other respects part is committed  to the opposition – is rushing to defend the government and its handlings, accusing AKEL of ideological obsessions in relation with the condemnation of Israel’s genocidal policy.

DISY must give a reply as to whether it considers the defence of international law and the struggle to end the ongoing colonisation in the West Bank to be ideological obsession. It must clarify whether it considers that being a credible interlocutor means remaining silent in the face of the crimes that are being committed.

We reiterate that credibility means being consistent to principles, all the more so when these principles constitute the Cypriot people’s most fundamental protective shield against the Turkish occupation.
