Cyprus needs a new, modern and sustainable development model

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 25th November 2020, Nicosia

Yesterday AKEL presented its proposal for the reshaping of the Cyprus economy setting priorities such as investment in research and innovation, the drive towards renewable energy sources, the development of Cyprus’ agricultural economy and the need for a modern industrial policy, digital transformation, the reform of the tax system and the strengthening of the cooperative economy and public organisations.

Ruling DISY party, in its attempt to comment on our proposal, not only did not point out exactly where it disagrees with our proposals, but in effect reaffirmed that it believes that nothing must change in our country’s development model. That is to say, we should continue with the same recipes/policies that have proven to be anti-developmental and anti-social.

Unlike the ruling party, the overwhelming majority of Cypriot society realizes that the Cyprus economy can no longer continue to rely on economic “bubbles” – banking or real estate – or on “get-rich-quick” practices, such as the golden passport industry, which produce wealth only for a small privileged minority.

The pandemic and its socio-economic consequences should have made everyone realize that Cyprus needs a new, modern and sustainable model of development that produces prosperity for the many and not for the privileged few.
