Working people in a mass and militant way have this year too conveyed
the message through the PEO May Day meetings organised in all cities
that they are united, asserting and defending their gains. Young people,
along with workers working for years on construction sites and factories,
with their mass participation have once again honoured workers
day, Red May Day, in the appropriate way on Tuesday 1st May.

The capital was again the centre of the celebrations which were attended
by the President of the Republic, Ministers, other state officials
and the Ambassadors of Cuba and Venezuela. It is worth pointing out
that Turkish Cypriot workers were also present this year too. The meeting
began with speeches outside the central PEO offices, which was
followed by a big demonstration to Freedom Square.

In his own address to the May Day meeting, the General Secretary of
AKEL Andros Kyprianou called on the working people who are being
exploited, regardless of national origin, whether Cypriot or foreign
workers. We call on them to reinforce the ranks of the class-based trade
union movement, to struggle to gain all that belongs to them”, adding
that “AKEL, the Party of the Working People, was, is and will always
be on their side.”
