Christodoulides’ theories on international law are dangerous for Cyprus and its struggle
3 September 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
President Christodoulides stated in an interview with journalist M. Kalatzis on Plus TV channel that our country should not act according to international law, but by Cyprus aligning itself with the mighty of the world.
Mr. Christodoulides’ theories on international law are dangerous for Cyprus’ cause. The Republic of Cyprus has always based its existence and struggle for freedom on the defence of international law. One wonders whether Mr. Christodoulides understands that awareness of the interests that prevail internationally is one thing, and what he says about international law is something completely different.
What will he say tomorrow at the UN General Assembly about Turkey’s invasion and occupation of our homeland, if he himself disrespects international law?
How will we prevent the upgrading or even recognition of the illegal regime (in the occupied areas)?
How will we repel the Turkish demands for a two-state solution and encroachments on the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone when he himself abandons the weapon of international law that our country has?
What will our country do tomorrow when Mr. Christodoulides’ current allies once again turn towards Turkey, which is more valuable to their interests?
Does he not understand that the law of the mighty is, by definition, for the mighty?
But that even they do not dare to declare that there is no international law, but only claim that it is on their side?
AKEL reminds Mr. Christodoulides that international law, even though it is currently being trampled on by powerful states, is the shield of small states and struggling peoples such as Cyprus and its people.
Let him not repeat these theories, which will end up having grave consequences Cyprus.
