“Being engaged in a war against the beast they created and Cyprus being their aircraft carrier” by Elias Demetriou, member of the International Department of the C.C. of AKEL

The jihadists are moving into new areas and at the same time the Cyprus Central Intelligence Agency is getting prepared for a possible attack in Cyprus. These and many other developments too are happening around us. But let’s put things straight…

The “Islamic State”: the region’s new beast

In June, the international community is shocked by humanity’s new enemy, namely the “Islamic State” organisation (or ISIS) when it seizes the city of Mosul of Iraq. This development led to the displacement of tens of thousands of people and to further bloody conflicts in Iraq. Subsequently, ISIS continues to advance taking advantage of vulnerable areas that it seeks to put under its control in both Iraq and Syria. At the same time, the West was preparing its weapons arsenal to yet again save mankind from the “axis of evil”…

At this point, the following question arises: how can reactionary jihadists become a trained army with wages amounting to $150 per day for each one? The answer, of course, can be found in the photographs taken of John McCain (formerly Obama’s rival presidential candidate for the leadership of the Empire) with leaders of the ISIS organisation a few years ago in Syria.

In 2011, the USA once again sided with fundamentalist elements (later on labelled as “terrorists with a barbaric ideology!”) in an unholy war in the Middle East so as to again gain access to the share of the spoils in the region. At that time, the target was the evil dictator Assad who by coincidence always represented one of the USA’s main enemies in the region. In this war, the USA and Arab Gulf countries supported both militarily and financially whoever and whatever they considered to be against Assad during the Syrian civil war among them and the fundamentalists who joined forces together with ISIS along the way.

ISIS, a child of the wars for the sharing of the spoils

At the same time, we need to take something else important into account. The ISIS was facilitated in its plans, given that it found itself facing the destruction caused by the wars, civil conflicts and decimated armies. In the midst of this destruction, was the devastation left behind by the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the subsequent unstable political situation inherited by an endless civil confrontation between Sunnis and Shiites. Besides, any further comment about the interference of the USA, Turkey and the Arab Gulf countries in the Syrian Civil war are not necessary. The essence is that the ISIS struck almost unobstructed, given that it found favourable conditions as a result of the destruction caused by the American interventions and their consequences.

However, this is a vicious cycle. Today, the US is proclaiming a war against a “new” axis of evil – in a struggle to combat terrorism which in reality they themselves had fostered. A similar narrative had also been promoted in the case of Afghanistan with the Soviet Union declared as the enemy in the 1980’s, Libya in 2011 aiming at the overthrow of Gadhafi and so on. Is the big superpower so naive as to constantly create and foster extreme fundamentalists who subsequently turn against it? Unfortunately, they are not … Everything is progressing according to a strategic plan, as long as the objective is to conclude on “a path towards the East”…

Cyprus the unsinkable aircraft carrier

And in the midst of this chaos, of course, is Cyprus…A “Green light” is given to the British to use the bases for military operations and to the French to take off from the “Andreas Papandreou” airbase – all of this for the sake of our “allies”…So, President Anastasiades has convinced Obama about what a steadfast ally Cyprus can become, whilst leaving the British High Commissioner thrilled, according to a recent interview he gave.

At the same time maps are being published showing that Cyprus may be part of ISIS’s vision as a section of a reactionary Empire. Even if these maps belong to the imagination of some people, it’s not difficult for anyone to imagine who ISIS’s main targets could be for waging terrorist strikes overseas.

The peoples of the region are once again becoming the victims of a game because certain forces and circles want to kick-start the engines of the war and arms industry, promote a fundamentalist Empire and redraw the blood-stained borders of the Middle East.

It is the peoples themselves who are the only bastion of resistance to these aggressions; the peoples who are struggling for bread, freedom and their own independence, but also that of other peoples.
