As long as the government does not want to clash with powerful interests, we will continue to pay dearly for fuel

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas

16 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Fuel prices are falling internationally, but in Cyprus they are either stagnating, or rising. And the consumer tax was reduced a few days ago, but by the time we got to the petrol stations the prices were increased. This mockery on the part of the companies in the fuel sector cannot continue any longer. Nor can the government’s apathy, which is not living up to its responsibility to exercise drastic controls on the market, continue any longer.

The facts are clear. As long as the government does not want to clash with powerful private interests, we will continue to pay more and more for fuel.

We call on the government for the umpteenth time to respond to our calls, but those of society as a whole as well and to confront the ongoing profiteering and the cartels. We call once again for the immediate abolition of the absurdity of double taxation on fuel, but also for the tool of the cap to be made use of.
