AKEL’s specific proposals to address pensioner’s problems

AKEL meets with EKYSY Pensioner’s Union

17 February 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Within the framework of the meetings that the Social Policy Sector of the C.C. of AKEL holds with organised groups and bodies, the Head of AKEL’s social Policy, Evanthia Savva, AKEL MP and Chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Committee Andros Kavkalias and the Head of AKEL’s Family Policy Maria Ioannidou had today a meeting with the General Secretary of the Union of Cypriot Pensioners (EKYSY-PEO) Kostas Skarparis.

The problems faced by pensioners were discussed. The most important ones focused on the need for:

  • Abolition of the levelling penalty of 12%.
  • Revision of the legislation regarding the provision of the allowance for a pensioner on low pensions so that the student grant and the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation (KOAP) are not counted as income.
  • Covering the increased cost of specific drugs by the National Health Scheme for the elderly.
  • Finding a solution to the enormous delays in the examination and payment of pensions and the low pension pensioner’s allowance and the need to simplify these procedures.
  • Modernisation of the Housing for the Elderly and Disabled Act 1991.

As AKEL we will continue to struggle, both inside and outside Parliament, to solve the problems pensioners face today.
