AKEL’s message to the (United Cyprus Party) BKP Regular Congress

The Turkish Cypriot ‘United Cyprus Party’ (BKP) held its 6th Regular Congress which convened on Sunday 30 October. Representatives from AKEL and the class-based trade union federation of PEO attended the Congress where political developments in the world and in Cyprus were discussed.

AKEL was represented by Ilias Demetriou, Head of the Rapprochement Bureau of the Party and member of the Central Committee.

AKEL’s message to the BKP Regular Congress follows:

“Dear comrades,

AKEL sends solidarity greetings to your Regular Congress. We wish that this Congress will mark an important milestone towards strengthening successful struggles for peace and social progress on our island.

Your Congress is undoubtedly taking place in one of the most difficult periods of the Cyprus problem. We say this bearing in mind the warmongering international conditions, the partitionist positions that are being tabled on the negotiating table regarding the Cyprus problem, the absence of real political will to create conditions for the resumption of the negotiating procedure from the point where the negotiations had remained at Crans Montana and the increasing efforts to restrict the will and the very communal existence of the Turkish Cypriots.

We, as the progressive forces of our people, need to be at the forefront of the struggle to resist these negative development. Through our struggles we should inspire the Cypriot people that the only viable solution to all the provocative actions is that of a reunited and free Cyprus on the basis of a Bi-zonal, Bicommunal Federation, with political equality as defined in the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, where the real masters will be those who water the land of our common homeland with their sweat and toil.

Dear comrades, we are with you in solidarity with your struggles for the free will of the Turkish Cypriot community against oppression aimed at the attempt to impose its cultural and socioeconomic assimilation.

Let’s unite and strengthen the struggle for a united Cyprus that will embrace all its children!

Long live a United Cyprus!

Long live our common struggle!”
