AKEL’s first initiatives in the new Parliament continue the course set over the past five year term

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou

15 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou reiterated in a statement today that AKEL’s first parliamentary initiatives, announced yesterday, are a continuation of the initiatives the Party has specifically promoted over the past five years, proving that it is the steadfast, reliable, and combative voice of society.

The General Secretary of AKEL pointed out that although several of AKEL’s proposals met with resistance from those who serve the few, the privileged, and those who prioritize super profits over the interests of society, the Party not only did not back down, but succeeded in getting specific and immediately implementable proposals approved for the benefit of workers, young people, pensioners, young families, and the vulnerable groups of the population.

S.Stefanou emphasized that, over the years, society has shouldered a disproportionate burden, and now is the time for it to receive its fair share of what was gained through its sacrifices. Now is the time to stand up to expensiveness, super profits, the housing crisis, and job insecurity.

The General Secretary of AKEL briefly outlined the first parliamentary initiatives the Party will undertake:

– Taxing windfall and super profits to fund the state’s housing policy.

– Housing policy with programs that cover more and more people, first and foremost young people.

– Support for working people’s incomes by guaranteeing minimum employment conditions for all workers.

– Permanent reduction of VAT on electricity to 5% and the elimination of double taxation on fuel.

– Comprehensive support for young parents to combat the low birth rate.

The General Secretary of AKEL concluded by stressing that: “Only AKEL can fight and win this battle in Parliament. Because it has proven itself to be a force that does not compromise with vested interests and does not remain silent in the face of injustice.

The dilemma of next Sunday’s election is clear: which side will we choose to strengthen with our vote—will we choose society or super profits? The answer must be clear: With AKEL, for society!”
