AKEL we will continue to struggle against the government’s attempts to privatize CYTA
Government trying to put CYTA’s profits into the pockets of big capital
Statement of Stefanos Stefanou, AKEL C.C. Spokesperson
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th June 2016, Nicosia
The Semi-governmental organization Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) announced yesterday an increase in profits amounting to 13 million Euros. In 2014 CYTA’s net profit was EUR 57 million, while in 2015 profits rose to EUR 70 million.
That is to say, at a time when the Anastasiades- DISY party government is seeking to privatize CYTA, CYTA itself announced an increase in profits. And it is these profits that the government is trying to put CYTA’s profits into the pockets of big capital, instead of channeling them to serve society’s needs, maintaining the public character of CYTA and the other profitable Semi-governmental organizations.
As AKEL we will continue with consistency and determination to struggle against the government’s attempts to privatize CYTA because maintaining CYTA as a public Semi-governmental organization, which should of course be modernized in order to address any distortions and problems in its operation, is an issue that has to do with defending the public interest.
One message we want to convey to the government is that it must end its efforts to privatize CYTA otherwise it will continue to find AKEL opposing its plans.
