AKEL: We are concerned about the Turkish positions but also the President’s tactics
Statements by the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou on the five-party meeting on the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 10th April 2021, Nicosia
We are very concerned about the Turkish positions expressed in view of the Geneva Conference.
The unacceptable demands for a two-state solution and confederation cannot by worry every rational Cypriot and of course reject them.
At the same time, I do not hide from you the fact that we are extremely concerned about the way in which Mr. Anastasiades is trying to deal with Turkish aggression and intransigence. We are very afraid that he is once again attempting to play the blame game, which he tried to do at Crans Montana, in our view, as a result of which Turkey was exonerated by the UN but also by the International Community in general, while responsibilities were apportioned on the Greek Cypriot side with the position recorded in the report submitted by the UN Secretary General that he concluded that we didn’t demonstrate the political will to go to the very end. We are therefore concerned about how Mr. Anastasiades will handle this Turkish aggression and its unacceptable demands.
AKEL is adamant that Mr. Anastasiades must insist on positions of principles, but at the same time show great flexibility on tactical issues and put conditional proposals which, provided they are implemented, will pave the way for meaningful negotiations. If the Turkish side does not respond positively, then it will remain exposed in the eyes of the International Community and thus it will not be able to promote its plans to the detriment of the Republic of Cyprus.
AKEL has given a comprehensive proposal on the Cyprus problem to Mr. Anastasiades since 8th December. I regret to note that we have not heard the President’s view on these issues.
