AKEL – “UNITED RUSSIA” party bilateral meeting

Today at the central offices of the Central Committee of AKEL a bilateral meeting took place between AKEL and the “United Russia” party. The AKEL Delegation was headed by the member of the Political Bureau of the CC AKEL Christos Christofides and the “United Russia” party was headed by Andrei Klimov, member of the Presidium of the General Council of the party.
The meeting dealt with the Cyprus problem and the relations between the Republic of Russia and the Russian Federation, the crisis in Ukraine and the developments in Syria and the wider region of the Mediterranean. In addition, the two sides exchanged views on international political and economic developments.
On its part, AKEL briefed the “United Russia” party on the recent developments surrounding the Cyprus problem and called for the support of the Russian Federation at the United Nations Security Council and elsewhere towards the direction of achieving a solution based on principles. AKEL also reiterated its principled position on the non-accession of Cyprus to NATO and the “Partnership for Peace”, as well as its opposition to the European sanctions being enforced against the Russian Federation and stressed that AKEL was the only party that voted last week in the House of Representatives against the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement which triggered the bloodshed in Ukraine.
Finally, AKEL and “United Russia” party exchanged views on the scope for strengthening their cooperation in international bodies and parliamentary assemblies.
