Meeting between the General Secretary of AKEL and the Cuban Ambassador
29 March 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou met with the new Cuban Ambassador to Cyprus, Ruben Pino Martinez. The General Secretary of AKEL was accompanied by the Head of International Relations and European Policy of AKWL, Vera Polycarpou.
During the meeting, they discussed the international situation created by the increased aggression of the U.S., the gross violation of international law and the UN Charter, and the attempt to enforce the imposition by any means—including the use of force — of American interests t General Secretary of AKEL to the detriment of states and peoples who do not yield to the threats of Trump and his administration.
Regarding Cuba, Stefanos Stefanou reiterated AKEL’s condemnation of the 65-year-old illegal commercial, economic, and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. against Cuba, and in particular the current obstruction of Cuba’s access to the fuel/petroleum market. The U.S. aims to provoke an energy crisis in the country and to strangle the entire Cuban people.
In the face of these threats, AKEL emphasizes the need for all UN member states to support the right of Cuba and its people to determine their own system of development without any foreign interference or attempts to undermine its independence.
The Cuban Ambassador stressed the Cuban people’s determination to resist any threat to their sovereignty and independence, as well as the importance of the international solidarity movement that stands by Cuba during this difficult time, offering political, moral, and material support.
Finally, the General Secretary of AKEL reaffirmed that AKEL and the entire People’s Movement of the Left of Cyprus stand in unwavering solidarity with Cuba, the heroic Cuban people, as well as the country’s Communist Party, and is contributing to the ongoing effort to collect material aid in Cyprus.
