AKEL promotes joint initiative of opposition parties against privatisations bills

Statement of Georgos Loucaides, AKEL C.C. Press Spokesperson

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th May 2015, Nicosia

econ privatizations cyprusAKEL will seek the understanding and cooperation with the rest of the opposition parties so that a common political framework will be found on which to develop a joint initiative by our parties, in order to freeze the privatization of the Semi-governmental organizations, particularly the profitable organizations.

AKEL will do everything in our power to prevent the selling off of our national wealth and will be on the side of the working people and society till the very end, the overwhelming majority of whom reject the dogmatic obsessions of the government and ruling forces.

After the official government admissions that the privatizations are not a question of collecting revenues, and that they must be implemented even if they are not included in the Memorandum, it becomes evident that we are faced with another issue that is directly linked to the concerted effort of the DISY- Anastasiades government to serve big private interests instead of the well-intentioned interests of the Cypriot people.

Within this context, the profitable Semi-governmental organizations which are strategically important for the Cyprus economy are being driven by the government into decline, whilst Bills have been tabled that are attempting to institutionalize the complete control over the privatization procedure by the Ministerial Cabinet. The machinations of the government and DISY party in favour of private competitors, where they exist, or/and the surrendering of these organizations at a cut-price to big private interests, is more than obvious.

Our obligation, therefore, as opposition parties is to be able to find ways to coordinate our activities so that we can put an end to these machinations as soon as possible. AKEL will continue devote all its efforts in this direction
