AKEL on World Refugee Day
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19 June 2018
On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, AKEL expresses its solidarity with the refugees of Cyprus, as well as with refugees all over the world.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the number of people that have been uprooted as refugees is higher than ever. 65.6 million people have been forced to leave their homes, among them 22.5 million refugees, of whom more than half are children. Others are stateless, people who have been deprived of the possibility of obtaining a citizenship, but also access to fundamental rights such as education, health and medical care, work and freedom of movement. These are the tragic results of the ongoing imperialist wars that are sacrificing millions of innocent for the sake of the mighty and profits.
As AKEL, we assure the refugees of Cyprus who for years have been struggling for a solution of the Cyprus problem and to return to their homes. We also assure that we will always be at the forefront of the struggle for a just and peaceful solution that will liberate and reunite our country. At the same time, we will continue to unite our voice with the international movement struggling to eliminate the root causes that generate wars, the uprooting of the peoples and migration and that demand measures to support refugees in host countries through a human-centered approach based on solidarity.
