AKEL on World Consumer Day
15 March 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
World Consumer Day was established to highlight the need to protect and safeguard consumers.
Right now in particular, the wave of price inflation which is already sweeping through with increases in the prices of essential goods, energy, fuel and electricity is expected to worsen as a result of the war in Ukraine and the consequences of the sanctions that are being imposed.
The continued decline in the purchasing power of consumers, especially of vulnerable groups, pensioners, young people and the popular strata, is leading to a further deterioration of the economic situation, affecting in particular the right to basic needs.
Price hikes and increases may be a global phenomenon, but AKEL believes that the state and the government must intervene decisively to ensure that consumers are protected against rampant price rises and hikes.
AKEL’s demand is that policies should be promoted that will provide effective solutions and offer relief for the consumer. Towards this end, AKEL has taken numerous initiatives and submitted a series of proposals aimed at increasing available income, the reduction of the price of electricity and fuel and the combating of profiteering.
