AKEL on two Supreme Court decisions

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th February 2018, Nicosia

On the abolition of the Privatization Unit

Following the Supreme Court’s decision, which ruled that the Law for the Abolition of the Privatization Unit is constitutional, the government ruling forces must abandon the policy of privatizations and the sell-out of public property and wealth. In doing so, they will be in line with the will of the majority of political forces. The government ruling forces must understand that the dogmatic obsession on pursuing anti-social policies are damaging the public interest.

With regards the Law on School Holidays

The Supreme Court’s decision concerning school holidays recalls the regressions of DISY and the President of the Republic with regards the issue of the Enosis referendum day, which caused damage to the Greek Cypriot side and to the efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem. Besides it is no coincidence that everything that subsequently occurred around this issue has been the subject of a negative reference against the Greek Cypriot side in the penultimate report submitted by the UN Secretary-General Mr. Gutierrez.

The negative consequences that had been provoked highlight the need for the President of the Republic to remain consistent to the goal of the solution without succumbing to any petty-political considerations which cause political damage.
