AKEL on the nuclear power station in Akkuyu Turkey

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 4 April 2018, Nicosia

AKEL is extremely concerned about yesterday’s laying of the foundation stone of the nuclear power station at Akkuyu Turkey in the presence of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In recent years, AKEL had sounded the alarm about the danger stemming from the serious environmental consequences of the construction of a nuclear power plant just a few kilometers away from the coast of Kyrenia.

Nuclear power has proved how dangerous it can be. This is what the victims of Chernobyl and Fukosima remind us of every day. An accident or a leak, apart from the environmental disaster, will endanger the lives of thousands of people in the wider region of the Mediterranean.

On this occasion, we reiterate our general position against the construction of nuclear power stations and the need for the phasing out of existing ones.
