AKEL ON THE MURDER ON “GOLDEN DAWN” PARTY AND THE MURDER OF THE ANTI-FASCIST FIGHTER

Statement by Spokesman CC AKEL George Loucaides

The phenomenon of the Nazi “Golden Dawn” party in Greece had from the very beginning provoked the grave concern of progressive and democratic people, movements and political forces both in Greece and in Cyprus, but also in Europe in general.

The presence of “Golden Dawn” in the Greek Parliament, the persistent outbreaks of racist violence, fascist activities and rhetoric of the members of the “Golden Dawn” party and the latest criminal activity against members of the Communist Party of Greece KKE and the Communist Youth of Greece KNE in the Perama neighbourhood of Pireas, and yesterday’s murder of the 34-year old Pavlos Fisas in the Keratsini neighbourhood of Athens, have demonstrated to everyone now the criminal character and enormous danger of the “Golden Dawn” party for the Greek people and democracy.

As AKEL, we condemn in the strongest possible terms these criminal actions of “Golden Dawn”, whose presence is on the one hand directly related to the immense social problems the Greek people is facing under the yoke of the Memorandum, but at the same time it is not irrelevant to the support “Golden Dawn” party receives from the system itself and monopoly interests in order to squash the surging peoples movement of resistance to the Memorandum austerity policies.

Developments in Greece reaffirm the necessity that fascism’s snakes egg must be crushed before its too late, because otherwise the cancer of fascism – Nazism can take uncontrollable dimensions, especially when the social and political conditions favour such a development..

Consequently, developments in Greece should at least lead the political world in Cyprus to reflect and especially the government and those in power, who pretend through their public statements that there is absolutely nothing for Cypriot society to worry about any corresponding existing phenomena.
