AKEL on the final peace agreement between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces – People’s Army (FARC-EP)

AKEL welcomes the final peace agreement reached between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia- People’s Army (FARC-EP) for a political solution to the long-lasting armed conflict caused by the imperialist interventions, the brutal state terrorism and repression exerted against the popular masses and the huge inequalities, exploitation and mass poverty.

AKEL expresses its appreciation towards Cuba which played a key decisive role in the achievement of the agreement, as well to Norway, Venezuela and Chile too.

The agreement will be put to a referendum in October. The prospect of a lasting peace represents a positive development for the country itself, but also for other peoples as well. It creates preconditions for addressing all those problems that produced the conflict.

However, the implementation of the peace agreement will be a difficult and complex process, requiring the practical solidarity of the international community, the peoples and the international left movement taking into account the rejection of the agreement by the powerful extreme-right wing and paramilitary groups seeking to undermine the attainment of peace.

We express our solidarity with the Colombian people and with the Colombian Communist Party and left forces of the country. We wish the procedure to move forward so that the aspirations of the Colombian people for peace, democracy and social progress shall be fulfilled.
