AKEL on the death of Kostas Kazakos

14 September 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

AKEL expresses its profound grief at the passing away of the great actor and director Kostas Kazakos, who left his indelible mark in the field of culture, theatre, cinema and television.

His legacy in the arena of social and political struggles is significant, actively participating in mass cultural organizations and serving for years as an MP for the Communist Party of Greece. The theatrical performance “Our Great Circus”, which was boldly performed on stage by Jenny Karezi along with other leading artists in 1973, during the military junta of the colonels in Greece, has gone down in history as a symbol of the anti-dictatorial struggle and of unyielding militant stance of cultural artists. His statements on Culture and the mission of the people of the arts and letters were special and significant.

Kostas Kazakos also had a special relationship with Cyprus. Until the end of his life he stood by our people, watching and agonizing over the course of the Cyprus problem.  In September 1974, together with his wife, the unforgettable Jenny Karezi, they organized a series of theatrical performances, giving all proceeds to the relief of the victims of the Cyprus tragedy. The prominent theatre actor maintained close and fraternal relations with AKEL and our People’s Movement of the Left of Cyprus, also participating in important political and cultural events organised by AKEL.

AKEL expresses its deepest and sincere condolences to the family of Kostas Kazakos.
