AKEL on the danger of foreclosures and the government’s inaction

Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Political Bureau member

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th November 2017, Nicosia

We have for a long time been warning that the curbing of the network of protection concerning foreclosures imposed by the Anastasiades government, whose development AKEL had proposed in the House of Representatives, would leave thousands of borrowers unprotected who were consistent with the payment of their loans until the outbreak of the economic crisis.

Given the inaction and lack of political will on the part of the government and ruling forces, and since it is also known that the commercial banks are coming under political pressure to postpone planned foreclosures to be implemented immediately after the presidential elections, as AKEL we have elaborated and will shortly table in the House of Representatives new proposals, aiming precisely at the protection of primary family homes and small business premises.
