AKEL on the Cabinet decision to establish a Deputy Ministry of Culture

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th July 2020, Nicosia

AKEL considers the political decision taken by the Council of Ministers to establish a Deputy Ministry of Culture, though belatedly and after regressions, a positive development, given that it fulfills an assertive goal of our Party with regards cultural development and creation in our country. The announcement, however, is not enough. What needs to be done is the implementation of an overall plan, driven by a vision, with innovation and effective structures free from any problems of the past. Above all, the government ruling forces must abandon the policy of devaluating and underestimating the artists-creators of culture, putting cultural activity high among the priorities of their government policy. Furthermore, they need to significantly increase the funds they allocate for cultural creation, primarily for Cypriot cultural creation, but also to proceed with the construction of the necessary cultural infrastructures.

AKEL to be able to take an overall position on the issue awaits the elaboration and submission of the government’s proposal, with all the elements that will make up the Deputy Ministry of Culture.

AKEL’s willingness to participate in a structured dialogue is given, which besides is the longstanding practice pursued by our Party.
