AKEL on the appointment of the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy on Cyprus

6 January 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The appointment of María Angela Holguín Cuéllaras as the UN Secretary General’s personal envoy on Cyprus problem is a positive development.

However, the critical issue is to pave the way for the resumption of negotiations from where they were suspended in 2017, on the agreed basis and framework, on the basis of the Guterres Framework and the entire body of work agreed at the negotiations. This is the most appropriate way to go the last mile towards a solution to the Cyprus problem based on principles that will liberate and reunite our country and people.

The demands of the Erdogan-Tatar duo for a two state solution and recognition of sovereign equality are unacceptable. It is the consistency and persistence of the Greek Cypriot side on the agreed basis and framework, which besides is supported by the international community, that will either pave the way towards a solution if there is a shift [in the positions of the occupying power and the Turkish Cypriot leadership, or expose them for their positions.
