AKEL on statements by the Attorney General

16 February 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Attorney General made statements yesterday on the disclosure of classified documents by journalists, noting that any transmission, retransmission, description or reference to such documents is a criminal offence punishable by seven years’ imprisonment.

We consider that such statements constitute an implicit threat against journalists whose job is not merely to relay information and statements, but to investigate and disclose issues. At the same time, such statements send a message ensuring cover-ups, since those seeking a cover-up in various cases will simply be able to label relevant documents as confidential.

Institutions and the authorities must promote transparency, accountability and strengthen in every way the freedom of the press, and not terrorise journalists by conveying erroneous messages that are reminiscent of other times.
