AKEL ON PREPARATION OF A BILL FOR A HAIRCUT BEFORE EUROGROUP MEETING
Statement by AKEL C.C. Press Spokesman Georgios Loucaides
Very serious questions are being raised to the President of the Republic after the discovery of the letter from the Director General of the Ministry if Finance regarding the instructions that were given for the preparation of a Bill for the haircut on deposits before the Eurogroup meeting of 15th March 2013.
Firstly, because Mr. Anastasiades kept Mr. Giorgos Panteli as his Counsellor, including him in the negotiating team at the Eurogroup meeting of 25th March, but also at the meeting with the political leaders on 1st April when from the 22nd March he had been informed by the General Director of the Ministry of Finance that it is Mr. Pantelis who gave orders for the preparation of a Bill for the haircut of deposits.
Accordingly, since Mr. Anastasiades persists on the position that they were concealing the actions by officials of the Ministry of Finance from him, shouldn’t he at the very least take action against those responsible and not reward those who have acted in this way?
In addition, how is it possible that the Minister of Finance knew that the issue of the haircut would be raised at the Eurogroup meeting, as he himself publicly admitted, at the same time when instructions were given by technocrats of the Treasury for the preparation of a Bill whilst the President insists on the one hand that no one informed him and on the other he grants full trust in all those who withheld this very important information?
