AKEL on International Youth Day

The Left fulfils its mission when it meets young people’s concerns, aspirations and demands

12 August 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

On the occasion of 12th August, International Youth Day, AKEL extends a warm greeting to all the young people of our country, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, to all young people living and working in Cyprus. To the young workers and the unemployed, to the young generation of science, the arts and sports, to students, to the school pupils population, to the young people active in the ecology, human rights and social solidarity movements.

AJEKL addresses a generation that has experienced nothing but crises since its adolescence. A generation that, for the first time in decades, is forced to live in worse conditions than their parents and grandparents had endured. Unemployment, job insecurity, the commercialisation of education, unaffordable rents and loan repayments and multiple inequalities are just some of the problems that a large section of young people face on a daily basis.

AKEL addresses a greeting to a young generation that is often targeted in order to delegitimise its demands, rather than solutions and answers being provided to all that frustrates it on a daily basis.

On the occasion of International Youth Day, AKEL calls on the young generation to rally together in the struggle for a free, reunited and peaceful Cyprus, a prosperous Cyprus, and a Cyprus of democracy, progress and solidarity.

AKEL knows that the Left fulfils its mission when it meets young people’s concerns, aspirations and demands. When it responds to its visions for today and tomorrow. When it develops together with young people a collective understanding for a new society. This is the path that AKEL promises to continue on. Together with EDON, the biggest and most active youth organisation in our country. Together with the young people of Cyprus, who we want to be fighters and protagonists for today and tomorrow.
