AKEL ON CONTACTS IN US
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 15th November 2013, Nicosia
The delegation of AKEL headed by Andros Kyprianou, General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, continued its contacts in the US.
Yesterday the AKEL delegation held meetings with Mrs. Illeana Ros-Lehtinen, President of the Sub-Committee for the Middle East, Mr. E3d Royce President of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Congress, Mr. Michael Grimm US Congress member, Mrs. Dina Titus US Congress member, Mr. Jason Bruder President of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senators Robert Menendez and John Sarbanes.
The General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou briefed all his interlocutors about the developments on the Cyprus problem. He put forth the positions of the Greek Cypriot side regarding the issuing of a joint communique and the position that the efforts must aim at achieving a bi-zonal bi-communal Federation with political equality as set out by the relevant United Nations Resolutions, with a single sovereignty, a single citizenship and a single international personality. He analysed the concerns of the Greek Cypriot side with regards important aspects of the Cyprus problem, such as the property issue and governance, as well as the issue concerning security, guarantees and the withdrawal of troops, stressing that to consider that a EU member state needs guarantees is unacceptable.
Today, the delegation is continuing its schedule of meetings in Washington. The General Secretary of AKEL is accompanied in his contacts by Toumazos Tsiellepis, member of the C.C. of AKEL and Head of the Department on the Cyprus problem.
