AKEL on “Alithia” press report: A blow to its reader’s intelligence
2 October 2021, ‘Astra’ radio station
AKEL’s Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas described a report published by “Alithia” as a “blow to its reader’s intelligence”.
Speaking to ‘Astra’ radio, Giorgos Koukoumas was asked to comment on an article published by “Alithia” newspaper, which refers to an “insidious attack launched by AKEL against the Republic of Cyprus”, on the occasion of tomorrow’s event being organised by AKEL in Deryneia for solution and reunification.
Koukoumas described the report as absurd. He recalled that dozens of organizations and parties from both communities, as well as representatives of foreign parties and the President of the Left Group in the European Parliament, who reject a two state solution and support the solution of bizonal, bicommunal federation, denouncing the Turkish occupation, will participate in tomorrow’s event.
Furthermore, the AKEL C.C. Spokesperson said that the first and biggest obstacle to the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation is the insistence of Turkey and Tatar on a two state solution and that it is obvious that we cannot arrive at a solution by persisting this perspective.
At the same time, G.Koukoumas added, the British ‘ideas’ which lead us to the solution of confederation are also an obstacle and the worrying thing is that neither the government, nor the ruling DISY party have shown an inclination to reject these positions.
AKEL, he said, has rejected the content of these proposals from the very beginning, while at the same time the President of the Republic is not demonstrating steadfastness and consistency to a solution of bizonal, bicommunal federation, given that some days he supports the resolutions of the UN whilst on other days he submits proposals promoting the solution of decentralised federal and a return to the 1960 constitution.
