AKEL MEP and GUE/NGL denounce the attacks against Israel’s Arab citizens
20th January 2017
The Confederal Group of the European United Left – Nordic Green Left in the European Parliament yesterday issued a statement highlighting and denouncing the recent Israeli attacks on the Arab community of Israel. The attacks resulted in the death of two people and the injury of Ayman Audi, MP and head of the Common List which is the third political force in the Israeli parliament (KNESSET).
AKEL MEP and member of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with Palestine, Neoklis Sylikiotis denounced the aggressive practices and discrimination exerted against the Arab community in Israel, which, as he stressed, violate basic principles of human rights.
AKEL MEP N. Sylikiotis made a particular reference to the injury suffered by the Member of the Knesset Parliament Ayman Odeh (HADASH), leader of the “Joint List”. At the same time N. Sylikiotis addressed an appeal to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, as well as to the European Council too, to suspend the Association Agreement with Israel until it ceases to violate Article 2, which clearly states the obligation to respect human rights.
Martina Anderson, Chairwoman of the EP Delegation for relations with Palestine also issued a statement. Anderson denounced the obvious hypocrisy on the part of Israel and called on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to put an end to the unacceptable practices that are violating human rights.
