AKEL meets DISY President

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th June 2014, Nicosia

meets averof

It is very well known that the governing Democratic Rally DISY party and the Anastasiades government have a completely different philosophy and approach, as well as different views on many issues.

For example, we do not agree with the inconsistent and contradictory handling of the Cyprus problem, which enables Mr. Eroglu to continue his communication games unhindered.

Neither do we agree with the anti-social policies of the Anastasiades government that are characterized by its blind submission to the Troika, and which only serve the interests of the privileged few who supposedly will kick-start the Cyprus economy, whilst simultaneously loading the burden of the crisis on the majority of the people.

As AKEL, we believe that our principal duty is to protect society from the attack it is under, ensure that Cyprus can stand on its feet today so that it can wage the struggle for its future, so that it will not count victims, ruins and live in insecurity even when Cyprus will rid itself of the Memorandum.

In the same way, we also disagree with the arrogant, authoritarian and completely derisory way the government is operating in institutions on issues relating to meritocracy and transparency.

However, a dialogue between the political parties is imperative, especially today when there are numerous critical issues before the people that need to be addressed and resolved.

In terms of socio-economic issues and the approach of the Government and DISY on how the country is being administered, it is clear that the way they are acting leaves no room for any understanding. In relation to the Cyprus problem, however, AKEL reiterates that its solution is a priority for our Party. It is an issue that has to do with the very survival of our people on the land that gave birth to it.

AKEL believes that a serious, sincere and prudent handling of the Cyprus problem is imperative. We are ready to back any action in the correct direction, towards the liberation and reunification of our country on the basis of a just, functional and viable solution of the Cyprus problem; a solution that will create prospects for a better future for all the people of Cyprus ∙ Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.

In addition, we are also ready to seek consultation on issues related to the modernization of the state and institutions, the enhancement of transparency and meritocracy that will create the pre-conditions to drive the country and society forward.

This was the context of our meeting with Mr. Neophytou. We had a constructive discussion that we will also initiate with other political parties in an effort to collectively promote measures that will address the people’s problems and restore society’s confidence in the institutions and political parties themselves.
