AKEL GS: The government’s barbed wire mesh doesn’t solve problems, but creates new ones
17th March 2021, DIALOGOS
“From 1974 onwards, the Cypriot people have been waging the struggle to get rid of the barbed wire of division. It is incomprehensible today for the government ruling forces to be invoking the barbed wire to deal with the migratory flows from the occupied areas to the free zones,” said the General Secretary of AKEL.
Andros Kyprianou pointed out in the morning program of ‘Astra’ radio station that according to the agreements that have been signed, the Republic of Cyprus has obligations towards refugees and specific procedures must be followed. The General Secretary of AKEL stressed that the barbed wire installed in the area of Astromeritis is causing a lot of problems to residents and farmers in the area, while it does not solve the problem as anyone can go over or through the gaps. He pointed out that it was the most inappropriate way to deal with the problem of migration flows.
He also said that the government ruling forces do not know whether the installation of the barbed wire will in the end cost only half a million euros, saying that the working hours involved must be calculated as well.
A.Kyprianou noted that we cannot drive back refugees in whose countries the situation is volatile, but we have an obligation to accept them.
