AKEL GS: Developments will be negative if there is no positive result from the Geneva conference

17th March 2021, DIALOGOS

The informal five-party conference on the Cyprus problem will be difficult, said the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou, noting that the situation has changed greatly from how it was at Crans Montana.

Speaking to the morning edition of ‘Astra’ radio station, A.Kyprianou said that the government’s failure to act and the absence of any negotiation whatsoever over the past 3.5 years have created a negative atmosphere. He added that Turkey is more aggressive and intransigent, noting that it is putting forth unacceptable demands, such as the proposal for a two-state solution or confederation, while it is proceeding to actions that are aiming at consolidating partition.

The General Secretary of AKEL pointed out that AKEL attaches great importance to the informal conference, saying that the UN Secretary General will want to hear and decide whether there is any common ground for a resumption of substantive negotiations.

The General Secretary of AKEL also stressed that the only option before us is the solution of the Cyprus problem based on Bizonal, Bicommunal Federation (BBF) and this is where everyone’s attention should be focused on. He added that the goal of certain forces and circles is to cultivate negativity among public opinion as most of them disagree with the solution of BBF. A.Kyprianou underlined, however, that if BBF is abandoned, there will be no discussion about a unitary state, but about partition. He said that partition will be the starting point for new adventures, adding that when Turkey will consolidate its presence Cyprus over time, it will also start thinking about how it will take over the rest of Cyprus. He also wondered why certain forces and circles are spreading panic, saying that unbearable pressure would be exerted on the Greek Cypriot side.

At the same time, the General Secretary of AKEL said that so far AKEL have not received any answer from President Anastasiades about AKEL’s proposals on the Cyprus problem.
