AKEL GS: The Government must reflect on the examples of corruption it is setting to the people

The Government must reflect on the examples it is setting to society on the issue of corruption and interwoven interests, declared the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, at the same time criticizing the Anastasiades government that in recent years Cyprus has managed to top the table on corruption across the whole of the EU.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting with German MP Sevim Dagdelen, when asked if he was disturbed by the devaluation expressed by the people due to the recent events, Mr. Kyprianou responded affirmatively, saying, however, that this devaluation is not a current phenomenon as a process of depoliticization of society and the depreciation of politicians and politics had begun since the 1990’s.

“To some extent, it’s our responsibility, that of politicians. At the same time, however”, he noted, “a conscious effort is underway by certain circles to promote depoliticization because this suits them”. He added that over the last 8 years a perception has developed in society that everyone can do whatever they want, developing the mentality of easy and quick enrichment quite often through illicit and illegal processes and without anyone being punished.”

This, as he pointed out, must concern President Anastasiades and the government. “This is the first time that 95% of the Cypriot people say that there is corruption and interwoven interests in Cyprus. The EU has declared that Cyprus in the years 2014-18 leads the way in the increase of corruption”, he said and concluded by stressing that the Government must reflect on the examples it is setting to society.
