AKEL expresses its grief for the passing away of comrade Haris Kyriakides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 24 September 2020, Nicosia

The Central Committee of AKEL expresses its deep grief for the passing away of comrade Haris Kyriakides, who for decades was a leading militant of AKEL.

Haris Kyriakides was born on 7th December 1952, in Limassol. From a young age he was heavily involved in the progressive youth movement and in 1980, he joined the ranks of AKEL. A man with profound social sensitivities, dedicated to the struggle for a qualitatively advanced society without exploitation, he became a practicing Doctor, whilst at the same time developing intense Party activity.

He soon emerged as a significant figure in the society of Paphos, enjoying respect from all political spectrums and the common people.

He was the         Secretary of Paphos District Organisation of AKEL in 2007-2015 and a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL. At the same time, he was for a number of years a member of the Council of the Pancyprian Medical Association (PIS) and a member of the Health Affairs Bureau of the Central Committee of AKEL.

A man with a rare ethos, deep ideological convictions, a high ideological-political understanding, a humble comrade, but at the same time also a fighter, whose name was associated with serving the people and selflessness.

It is therefore not a coincidence that, despite the long battle with cancer, he did not end for a single moment his interest and struggles for AKEL, its ideals and the collective interest.

The Central Committee of AKEL expresses its sincere condolences to his wife Iliada, his daughter Myria and his family.

The funeral of Haris Kyriakides will take place tomorrow, Friday, 25th September, at 4:00 pm at the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior in the village of Kissonerga, with the Central Committee of AKEL covering all costs. The body of the deceased will lie in state in the church from 3:00 pm onwards for the final farewell

A funeral eulogy will be delivered by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL Andros Kyprianou.

The family of the deceased will not accept condolences. Instead of wreaths, contributions will be made to the Social Solidarity Network of the People’s Movement and the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends (PASYKAF).

In consultation with the AKEL District Committee of Paphos, the Central Secretariat of AKEL has decided the following:

  1. All Party events scheduled to take place in the district of Paphos will be postponed for a period of eight days.
  2. The Party flags will remain at half-mast for 40 days.
  3. The photo of the deceased will be posted at the offices of the AKEL District Committee of Paphos.
  4. The library that is due to operate in a few months in the offices of the AKEL District Committee of Paphos will be named after Haris Kyriakides.
