AKEL denounces the new complaint filed against Abdullah Korkmazan

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th March 2021, Nicosia

AKEL condemns the new unacceptable complaint filed against the leader of the Turkish Cypriot “Left Movement” (Sol Hareket) Abdullah Korkmazan by the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar himself for supposedly “insulting” him.

More specifically, Korkmazan was arrested today and later released charged with making statements at a rally held last Saturday claiming that Tatar was being investigated by Interpol for corruption. In fact, the demonstration was held to condemn the persecution by the occupational regime and Turkey of all those who take a critical position towards Turkey, among them the Left Movement too.

The new development further demonstrates that Erdogan’s neo-Ottoman authoritarianism against opposition voices is becoming more and more entrenched within the Turkish community.

AKEL once again declares its support towards the big section of the Turkish Cypriots who are struggling against authoritarianism and the persecution of the opposite point of view, but also the efforts aiming at the full integration of the Turkish Cypriots by Turkey.
