AKEL denounces the judicial-parliamentary coup d’état in Brazil

Solidarity with the people and progressive forces of Brazil!

Alarming parliamentary diversion of President Roussef in Brazil!

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 8th September 2016, Nicosia

brazil int coup rousseffAKEL expresses its deep concern about the recent impeachment of President Dilma Roussef in Brazil by the country’s Senate. This development represents yet another anti-democratic overthrow of a progressive government in Latin. America.

The Latin American continent was always suffering from the overthrow of governments by the local ruling classes of the countries which were pawns of American imperialism in the region. Numerous coup d’etats, military interventions and the undermining of governments were all part of the continent’s political history. These methods have now been replaced by other means of intervention, either in public opinion or inside the very political system of various countries.

The progressive 13-year governance by the Workers Party (PT) in Brazil was a major obstacle to all those who wanted Brazil as an extension of Western interests in the region. Furthermore, the social programs implemented by these governments created a mass popular base of support towards the government of both Lula and Roussef, despite the continued existence of acute social problems in the country. In the last elections Dilma Roussef was elected by 54 million citizens of the country, a fact which reinforced the continuation of the Workers Party government.

The recent impeachment proceedings with the charges of alleged falsification of financial data was the Right-wing’s only way out to return to power. The Senate’s final decision led to the definitive removal of Roussef from power. The struggle of the supporters of the government, including that of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), will of course continue until the final vindication.

AKEL expresses its solidarity with all the progressive forces of the country in the struggle against the judicial-parliamentary coup d’état, but also for the defence of the right of the people of Brazil to choose their own country’s leadership.
