AKEL denounces the attempted assassination of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 7 August 2018, Nicosia

The assassination attempt on the recently re-elected President of the country is added to the long list of foreign interventions and attacks waged against the leadership of Venezuela. The goal of these interventions and attacks is to overthrow the Maduro government and to put an end to the reforms in the people’s interests that have been taking place since the Bolivarian Revolution.

The interventions and attacks are not an unprecedented phenomenon. We have witnessed terrorist attacks, assassinations and attempts at executing a coup d’état in the past by the reactionary opposition in cooperation with the foreign imperialist centres that back it. The continent of Latin American in general is characterized by a history of interventions and coup d’états against democratic governments, but also support for bloodthirsty dictatorships by the US in particular.

AKEL denounces the ongoing foreign interventions in Venezuela and expresses its unreserved solidarity with the struggle of the Venezuelan people for the defence of the independence and well-intentioned interests of the country.
