AKEL denounces the attempt to alter the status of Jerusalem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 6th December 2017, Nicosia
The intention announced by the US to transfer the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem constitutes a severe provocation first and foremost towards the international community, which with the adoption of United Nations Resolution 181 (1947) defined a special international status for the city. Such a political action would deal a fatal blow to any possibility of reaching a two-state solution, with an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4th 1967, and with East Jerusalem as its capital; a perspective which is supported by the international community.
If Trump carries out the threat by fulfilling the plans for the perpetuation of the occupation of Palestine, it will trigger reactions beyond Palestine, causing consequences that would be difficult to predict or curb.
AKEL denounces the intention of the US and joins its voice with all those forces demanding the annulment of the decision so as to avoid the possibility of new adventures and bloodshed in Palestine and throughout the volatile region of the Middle East.
We urge the Cyprus government to adhere to a position based on principles and to come out against this decision, otherwise it will be exposed in the eyes of the Arab world, but also of the overwhelming majority of the international community.
