AKEL denounces the arrest of members of the Turkish Cypriot Left Movement (Sol Hareket)

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 11th March 2021, Nicosia

AKEL denounces in the strongest possible terms the unacceptable arrest of the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Left Movement (Sol Hareket) Abdullah Korkmazan and other members of the Movement, under the pretext of their reaction to the provocative signs that are posted in the occupied territories praising Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan.

It is particularly worrying that the complaint was filed by the Youth branch of Turkey’s ruling AKP party. Moreover, this proves that these attempts are linked to the increasing political imposition of Ankara’s policies on the Turkish Cypriot community.

AKEL express its solidarity with the militants of the Left Movement who have been prosecuted, as well as with all of our other compatriots whom they attempt 9in various ways to silence due to their political beliefs.

As AKEL we will immediately denounce this action in international bodies.
