AKEL denounces anticommunist revision of the historical truth
The distortion of the historical truth and equation of communism with fascism constitute unashamed complicity in the growth of neo-fascism

At a Holocaust Remembrance event, that was organized jointly by the Ministry of Education and the Israeli Embassy, the speaker, who was the Headmaster of the Pancyprian Gymnasium Mr. L. Sepos, provocatively argued that Hitler’s Nazi Germany wasn’t the only one responsible for the Holocaust of the Second World War, but the Soviet Union as well! Mr. Sepo’s speech was so provocative that it prompted the Russian Ambassador to react by leaving the event.
Apart from the falsification of Cyprus’ modern history, certain forces and circles are now attempting to rewrite Europe’s modern history. We remind Mr. Sepos and the Minister of Education Mr. Prodromou that 27th January was established by the United Nations as the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust because on 27th January 1945 the Red Army of the Soviet Union liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp and put an end to the Nazi hell of the Holocaust. It is thanks to the sacrifice of the 20 million dead of the Soviet Union that the monster of fascism was crushed and human civilization in Europe and throughout the world was saved.
Today in Europe, the distortion of the historical truth surrounding the Second World War II and the equation of communism with fascism constitute unashamed complicity in the growth of neo-fascism.
We recall that this specific Headmaster is the very same person who, in violation of school rules, expelled a schoolgirl because she wore a headscarf. He is the same person who banned school pupils from taking part in the recent referendum organized by the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee of School Pupils, and he is the same person who publicly called the great Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos a “subversive bandit”.
Anti-communism and racism go hand in hand with authoritarianism and historical ignorance. The Minister of Education Mr. Prodromou is completely exposed for the outrageous cover he provides to this specific Headmaster in his every new provocative action.
