AKEL delegation visits the European University

21 October 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

A delegation of AKEL, headed by AKEL Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaides, visited the European University yesterday as part of the Party’s ongoing contacts with University institutions. The delegation also included AKEL MP Christos Christofias, as well as representatives of the Progressive Movement of Students “Proodeftiki”.

The AKEL delegation had a meeting with the Rectorate and President of the University, and visited the facilities of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry.

During the discussions held, the AKEL delegation was briefed – among other things – about the University’s plans for the further development of the university education provided, the upgrading of the institution’s buildings and the various collaborations being promoted with higher educational institutions abroad for the joint provision of study programmes.

The Rectorate of the University raised the demand for the promotion of the mutual recognition of qualifications between the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Republic, as well as the increase in the funds allocated for research and innovation, which are among the lowest across the European Union. The long-standing issue of increasing the student grant, as well as its fairer distribution based on socio-economic criteria, was also discussed.

After congratulating the European University of Cyprus for its work, the Parliamentary Representative of AKEL expressed the Party’s great appreciation for its significant contribution to university affairs, the Cyprus economy and society in general. As G.Loukaides stressed, higher education plays an important role in our country, contributing substantially to the GDP by attracting a large number of foreign students.

Finally, Giorgos Loukaides assured once again that AKEL will always stand by the University, but also by university education in general, so that they can continue to advance smoothly for the benefit of society and the fulfillment of the goal of establishing Cyprus as a regional educational and research centre and hub.
