NATO inter warWithin the framework of AKEL’s participation in a discussion held in Berlin regarding the role and historic responsibilities of NATO on the occasion of the upcoming NATO Summit in Warsaw, Aristos Damianou, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and AKEL MP, yesterday had meetings with the Co-Presidents of the Parliamentary Group of the Left Party “Die Linke”  Sahra Wagenknecht and Dietmar Barts, as well as with the Party’s MP’s in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag.

On AKEL’s part, a briefing was made on the course and state of play of the talks and the state of the economy, as well as on the recent parliamentary elections. The leadership of the Left Party explained its position on the issue of Brexit and on the ongoing discussion as to what Europe we want as an alternative perspective to the austerity policies.

In the discussion that took place on the role and historic responsibilities of NATO, there was a special session dedicated to the role of NATO in the creation of the Cyprus problem. The attempts to broaden NATO’s role in the wider Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East was also discussed.

The common view was expressed that the militarization of international relations which is being attempted through NATO is leading to political instability, causing asymmetric threats and violating International Law and human rights. The Left Party is currently promoting a resolution aiming at the dissolution of NATO.
