AKEL calls for mass participation in the anti-occupation event organised by the Famagusta Municipality in Deryneia on 5 August

AKEL Famagusta District Organisation statement:

3 August 2023

The AKEL Famagusta District Organisation, assessing the critical juncture of the solution of the Cyprus problem procedure is going through, joins its voice with the Famagusta Municipality and addresses an open call to all refugees from Varosha, but also to the entire Cypriot people, for their mass participation in the anti-occupation event it is organising this coming Saturday, 5 August 2023, at 7:30pm at the Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Famagusta in Deryneia. We will once again declare that we will never compromise with the occupation. That we will struggle to return to our city and for the reunification of our homeland. To demand that initiatives must be taken that should aim at the resumption of the negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans Montana.

We welcome the decision of the Famagusta Municipal Council to invite the Mayor of the Turkish Cypriots of Famagusta to its anti-occupation event, as well as the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the cultural part of the event. The Famagusta Municipality has correctly sought to develop good relations and cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot Mayor from the very first day of his election.  Meetings were held and relations were developed and that in itself is very important.

The anti-occupation meeting organised by the Famagusta Municipality was and remains an event that sends out clear messages against the occupation and ongoing colonization, in favour of the solution and reunification of our homeland and people. The participation of the Turkish Cypriot Mayor of Famagusta in such an event can only create hope that the goal for a solution is common and can be achieved. A solution that will lead us to reunification and peace.

The AKEL Famagusta District Organisation believes that the issue of Famagusta can act as a catalyst towards creating such a climate that will enable the immediate resumption of the talks from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana, on the basis of the Framework set out by Secretary General of the UN A. Guterres. Such a development will keep alive the hope for a return to our beloved Famagusta.
